Free romantic novels are key to many of the reader's romances who need some room in their budgets for things like food and housing. They are also a great way for readers new to the genre to discover without investing a lot of money. Regardless of your status as a romance reader, you can help yourself and your bank account by learning to navigate the many ways to find free and low-cost romance online and offline.

Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Google Play, and Kobo are all pretty standard. There are also a few site-specific apps like Libby and Instafreebie that you think are also worth downloading.
Consider setting up an email address specifically for book stuff. It may seem strange, but it's free and it might take five minutes. It keeps all your deals in one place so you have everything right where you want it when you need a new book, but payday isn't for another week. I like Gmail because you can separate promotions but your phone call.

YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY, WITH OVERDRIVE
I know it seems silly to recommend the library as a source of free books, but given that the literary community in general has nothing to do with romance, many Romantic readers assume that their libraries don't contain romance, or if they do, it's just some old copies of Danielle Steel books that someone donated.
To those readers, I say this: My local library, the Washington, DC Public Library System, currently has more than 1,800 paper books, more than 6,000 e-books, and more than 800 audio books in the "romance" category. The free romantic novels available include titles from authors you've read about on this site, such as Alyssa Cole, Courtney Milan, Sarah Mac Lean, Penny Reid, and Alisha Rai. And those were just the first five searches I did.
Libraries sometimes include waiting lists, so if you thrive on instant gratification, you may struggle. But you may have to ask yourself how many of those one-click books on your Kindle you actually read immediately, and give the "post a hold" button a try.
Bonus tip! If your library uses the Libby app, download it immediately. It won't take long; According to my personal experience, you can use the app, enter your library card number and happily peruse your new library of books in less time than it takes a tea kettle to cook. And the interface is so simple and easy to use, you'll never visit Amazon again.
WEBSITES FOR FREE ROMAN NOVELS
If your library doesn't have what you're looking for, you still have plenty of options. Of the sites below, only Harlequin is exclusively romance, but you won't have any trouble finding romance on any of these sites.
HARLEQUIN ONLINE READS
Even budding romantics are often familiar with the name Harlequin, and now you can watch it for free.
The Online Reads page posts serialized stories from Harlequin authors. The stories are free and you can filter by category - psychic, suspense, etc. - or by how much time you have to read.
INSTAFREEBIE
As it promises, Instafreebie is a site of books - many of which are also sold elsewhere - that you can download right away for free. (So you know: Instafreebie.)
In exchange for the book, the author gets your email address, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (see below), although it's another reason to think about setting up a separate email address for your bookworm life. Recent authors to appear in my Instafreebie deals include Cat Sebastian, Sarina Bowen, and Tessa Bailey, so these are solid options.
SMASHWORDS
Self-publishing or independent publishing is a big deal in romance, and many great books come out in that way.
Smashwords is the world's largest distributor of independently published ebooks, and nearly half of their 450,000 titles are romance, including about 75 percent of their top titles.
That's important to you, dear reader, because there are over 73,000 free books available on Smashwords - and many thousands of them are romance. It's almost too easy.
WATTPAD
Wattpad may be best known for its fan fiction, but independent romance authors have used it to tell their original stories for years.
There are a ton of statistics to help you sift through the ALLLL of Wattpad content, from the popularity of a story based on the number of reads and votes, to the tags used to categorize it.

BOOK + MAIN BITES
While it doesn't offer full books, the brand new Book + Main Bites site / app is a nice new option for browsing through book samples to find new titles and authors you like.
You pick and choose at sub-genre and heat level, read excerpts before dedicating yourself to a full book on time and Kindle space. If you decide you like a book, you can buy it through the app or find it yourself through your library / store of choice.
Because they are chosen by the authors, the free clips from the romance here are more deliberately selected than Kindle samples and better represent the book.
ROMANCE DEAL ALERTS
There are also a lot of people who go out of their way to find romantic book deals just for you! Sometimes the deals are on free romantic novels, but more often they're super cheap - $ 0.99 or $ 1.99 - which might be worth it for a favorite author or subgenre you want to read this weekend.
Bonus tip! There are TONS of free romance and sales eBooks. Romantic novels are usually serialized, and often when a new book in a series is about to be released, one or more of the other books in the series will drop in price. Or sometimes the first book in a series is always cheaper to attract. Regardless of the reason, if you have $ 2- $ 3, you can almost always find a book on sale that piques your interest.

If you're trying to keep a book budget of just over zero dollars, you may want to check out one of the subscription services. Each offers romantic readers something different. Aside from the audiobook option, you can get them for less than $ 10. Each also offers a free trial, so be sure to give it a try before buying to make sure the catalog is right for you.
SCRIBD
For $ 8.99 a month, you can get three ebooks and one audiobook, plus an unlimited number of magazines.
In 2015, when they were an unlimited subscription service, Scribd notoriously cut their romance library for not keeping up with readers' demand, but times seem to have changed.
A quick look at the catalog includes titles by Alyssa Cole, Colleen Hoover, and Beverly Jenkins, so clearly there are some excellent books out there.
PLAYSTER
Playster still offers unlimited access to its library for $ 9.95 per month, and you can add other options, such as movies and games, for an additional cost.

Kindle Unlimited is also unlimited (hence the name), and the library is huge. That's good news because you have a lot of options, especially to find independent authors, but bad news is that you may have to filter a lot of things you aren't looking for to find the things that you are.
AUDIBLE ROMANCE
Another brand new option, Audible's romantic audiobook package offers unlimited romance listening for $ 14.95 - and the price drops to $ 6.95 if you're already an Audible member or Kindle Unlimited subscriber.
